Naive

DPS project on water, testing out some ideas, decided to play with the classic example of Evian water spelling out Naive backwards.

New Brief Promote Me

righty this was gonna be a place where i would display and write about everything to do with this promote me brief, but i have come to realise that I'm already doing that in my sketchbook, so i would end up doing it twice if i put it all on here too, and it takes way to long. So instead this blog will be used further down the line in this project to share my ideas with the group and show it too them when we can;t meet up and inbetween lessons/tutorials.
But then we are also supposed to keep a blog for PPD to record progress, so i might use it for that too.  i think the group will work well, we all are hard working girls and seem to have pretty similar interests in terms of graphic design.  The areas we seem to be focusing in on are sustainablities, pass it on designs, blank cityscapes to show how much you need designers.

The major issues i'm having with the brief are that most exisiting forums, graphic design groups (things similar to what we are trying to promote. Don't actually seem to have a menthod of promoting other than blogs, websites, reputation and word of mouth. So it seems odd trying to think up new and interesting ways to get people to look at a design forum, but then saying that there are non graphic design examples in the form of stingers, flashmobs, youtube virals, stickers that can create a buzz and a curiousity. Enough for a curious people (and i think a lot of designers are very curious creatures) to think "ooo i wonder what that is about....i'll google that when i get home" I know i certainly do it and i can;t be the only one.

I ave been trying to document how often i see adverts relating to saving money/client change/CO2/sustainablity/fairtrade, and i must say its everywhere, throughout one episode or scrubs, during the break i saw about 6 adverts which addressed these themes, that why i feel like incorporating this into our ethos for our "design collective" that we are advertising for would be good, it doesn't give them an edge as such cos everyone from big multi national companies to independent companies are jumping on the sustainable/ethical bandwagon. But this is a definate now 21st century topic, its what a lot of people want to be seen getting involved in and i can;t help thats a good thing.

On thursdays lesson Orlagh showed us some fantastic web2.0 things blogs, wikis and all sorts, its interesting to see what other methods are out there, but it also shows how fragmented this self communications business is, you could easily end up with 20 different accounts for all this various methods of saying " look at me! i do really cool stuff too"

On a slightly different note, i learn how to do embossing down the print room on friday and want o go and learn about the solar plate embossing too, its a great way to print something without ink, and could maybe be worked into this project....

Also i really want to sort out this blog with tags and and better layout but i just don't have time atm! argh its annoying me, the to do list is
get books ot library relating to current project,
taking back previous library books for last project that i looked through but never got a chance to photocopy
do some of the DPS prpoject
book coach ticket for thursday
come up with some silly idea by tommorrow for what to do with £1000 to get famous for a weird lesson
do VCT essay before i start forgetting that it have to do it
print off all the research for promote me project and actually write stuff about it
do client profile
do price list designs for AFX design
test out other idea for AFX design invoices
apply to UCAS for that other uni just incase
go look around that other uni
get stuff ready for tomorrow and get stuff to show kate my mentor

apologies for the disgraceful grammatical and spelling errors that I know are above, i just can't be bothered to go back and change them right now.

The Nucleus Building Video

This is the short video made by myself and dan, as one of my outcomes of the project to show the branding and way finding system of The Nucleus within a 3D building setting.  Huge thank you to Dan for giving up his time to help me :)
The file is too big to upload on to blogspot, and I so I have uploaded it to youtube.

also add some screen shots of the film to go along side the film version.

Development

Below are two pages showing my current whereabouts with design, I think I have:
+a mark
+a name plus chosen typeface and size
+subdividing and wayfinding
I think the mark and the type show be used interchangeably  so you would have to use them both together, and the position of the logo could be below or next to the type, I also tested it small just to check that it doesn't lose its meaning and become to unrecognisable when small.
I have chosen my 3 shades of blue that i think are right for the brand on the second page. And on the page below i have the colours and use of the sub categories for organic, inorganic and physical chemistry.

To test out variations on my idea I done some quick tester business card ideas below.

I am working with Dan to create a 3D environment to show some of my designs this is what it looked like after 30mins or so of us getting initial ideas down onto Maya.

After speaking Orlagh she said that Futura typeface for the logo could be a bit dated and so i looked up similar typefaces and found which ones I had on my computer and tested them out, favourites are the top one (futura) second down (hevetica neue) and the bottom one.
Testing colour combo's of the logo, if i do it the lighter colour it might clash with the blue for the inorganic chemistry.

Some simple postcard design ideas that incorporate the subdividing of chemistry by colour.

To explain my logo better I have showed in three stages how it is the coming together of 3 separate hexagons that overlap, I also tested putting the RSC inside the logo. After speaking to Steve I think i have decided to scrap the RSc part of the logo idea as from re reading the brief i actually just need to rebrand the building, not the society. And one of the problems with the RSc idea is that the important part, the chemistry is the smallest character. So i might just have  name the nucleus and the strapline underneath.

After speaking to a chemistry student and speaking with Sarah Temple I decided to use the name "The Nucleus" with the strapline "royal society of chemistry centre" which i thought find well together being that the nucleus of something is the centre where things meet.  I also learnt that chemistry can be spilt into organic, inorganic and physical and that the colours you would associate with them would be green, blue and red, and so i've tested working this into my design idea.  Was testing if i wanted the main hexagon in the brighter or darker colour, think i prefer the right hand side.  Also i have designed it so each categories brighter hexagon is a different hexagon, so one of the three.

I started to think that I could use the dots pattern to create arrows as a wayfinding system within the building by highlighting certain dots.  I started to test the logo with lowercase and in black and white.

After doing a workshop with Orlagh I started working on the concept of a 6 side hexagon and dots, with the idea of having the RSc as the type element and overlapped hexagons as the mark.

First 2 pages of initial ideas development using Illustrator, these were the first ideas i showed to Steve, and felt there weren't really heading in the direction I wanted yet.
